The Government has today (Monday) announced Somerset will receive nearly £2.5million of extra cash to repair winter damage on the county’s roads.
Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has allocated Somerset the second biggest share in the South West of a £100million country-wide fund.
Wells MP James Heappey, who also works as Parliamentary Aid to Mr Grayling, has welcomed the announcement after Somerset was severely affected by heavy snow earlier this month.
He said: “Working with Chris Grayling in the Department for Transport means that I am able to raise the profile of the travel issues here in the Wells constituency.
“I am delighted that he has made these much-needed funds available so that our roads can be repaired.
“With the money now available, local residents should make sure they’re reporting any local potholes so they can hopefully now be fixed.”
The £2,437,335 will be spent on repairing potholes and any other necessary road improvements after this period of extreme weather. The funds are available to Somerset County Council immediately.
Potholes can be reported to Somerset County Council here.
Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: “People rely on good roads to get to work and to see friends or family.
“We have seen an unusually prolonged spell of freezing weather which has caused damage to our local roads.
“We are giving councils even more funding to help repair their roads so all road users can enjoy their journeys without having to dodge potholes.”
