This morning (Thursday) Shepton MP James Heappey discussed the imminent closure of the town's leisure centre, which is run by Whitstone School, with Headteacher Guy Swallow.
Having been contacted by a number of constituents, Mr Heappey and Mr Swallow discussed the decision and the impact of the past few years on the financial viability of the business.
There have been significant losses for the business, with gym memberships down following the pandemic, and Mr Heappey was keen this did not impact the school - which is the highest priority for Mr Swallow.
He said: "Having spoken to the Headteacher this morning, I completely understand the decision which has been made. Crucially, activities such as use of sports halls, hockey and astro turf will remain for groups who enjoy those sports on a weekly basis.
"There are alternative gym provisions across Shepton, and this is part of the reason memberships have dropped off. Whitstone School has made significant improvements over the past few years and I want the leadership to continue to focus on the great job they are doing there.
"I - of course - understand constituents' concerns and I will be continuing to engage with the Town Council as they look to ensure the closure has minimal impact on people who use the leisure centre.
"I also hope long term plans for the space will come to fruition in the near future for the better of Shepton Mallet'.
