Following numerous illegal traveller encounters across the Wells constituency over the last 6 months, Wells MP James Heappey joined dozens of other MPs in a House of Commons debate calling for a review of planning laws on travellers and gypsies encampments.
In a post on his Facebook page, James Heappey said:
“Last night's Adjournment Debate in the House of Commons was on Gypsies, Travellers and the related planning and enforcement issues. It was an excellent debate well supported by MPs whose constituencies have been similarly affected by illegal encampments.”
“I made a quick intervention but given all the challenges we have had this summer in Burnham, Berrow, Glastonbury, Street and Shepton Mallet it is well worth reading the whole debate here on Hansard.”
“Crucially, the Government recognises just how frustrating this issue is and has reassured that all policies in this area are under review. The Minister concluded by inviting suggestions for how policies can be improved. I will certainly be writing to him with some thoughts about what we've seen in the Wells constituency this summer but if any constituent would also like to contribute please email me on [email protected] and I will pass on your thoughts to Gavin Barwell MP.”
