Glastonbury MP James Heappey is backing one of the town’s organisations which hopes to ban neonic pesticides, after it was proven they are harmful to bees and other insects.
Mr Heappey met with Indra Francesco and Mike Birkin from the Friends of the Earth group at Glastonbury Tor to illustrate the impact of pesticides on wildlife and how without crucial pollinators some fruits and vegetables will struggle to grow.
Ms Francesco said: “We’re delighted that Mr Heappey has stated his clear support for the banning of bee-harming neonic pesticides. The science is clear that this is the right thing to do, and it’s vital that our farmers now have the support and advice they need so they can farm with nature and continue to grow quality produce with less reliance on chemical pesticides.”
Mr Heappey added: “I am glad the Government is seeking to ban neonic pesticides and that we are recognising the importance of pollinators in the agricultural sector.
“We must make sure that Somerset continues to produce the very best apples for our world-beating cider.”
