Politics has been on fast forward for the last few weeks. Referendum, resignations, a leadership race and the appointment of a new Prime Minister will have been completed in just twenty days.
Personally, I'm pleased that the Conservative leadership race has concluded so quickly. Although I also recognise that some members will be annoyed at not being able to take part and others will be angry at how they perceive Andrea Leadsom to have been treated.
Theresa May's competence and experience is well known but I have seen Andrea Leadsom at close quarters through the Energy Select Committee and can vouch for her incredible talent too. I think last weekend has shown that she was not yet ready to be Prime Minister but she has a great deal to offer and will surely be promoted to the cabinet.
Although the process has been truncated, we've reached the right result. At a time of real uncertainty, we need leadership. Now that we have it, the political sideshow is over and it is time to get on with disentangling ourselves from the EU.
I'm sure Prime Minister May will get us the right deal and I don't for a second doubt her commitment to doing so. She will - rightly - not rush to trigger Article 50 but at least now, we will have a PM leading the negotiations over the summer. That gives some much needed certainty and the markets have responded positively already.
