With restrictions on the verge of being lifted, I thought it might be good to focus on something other than Covid-19 in this week’s column.
While the pandemic has clearly been the overarching priority for the Government, the levelling up agenda is very much on the cards for Somerset – with some exciting plans now in the pipeline and becoming a reality.
Here in the Wells Constituency, there is of course the Towns Fund worth £23.6million in Glastonbury which will ensure transformative work on important buildings, as well as a focus on sustainability. Related to this, I actually met with Avalon Community Energy on Friday and it was great to hear about their brilliant plans and the excitement of this Government investment.
As well as this, there is the accelerator funding of £500,000 which has been handed to Mendip District Council for town centre regeneration, which is extremely welcome indeed.
Glastonbury is not the only town to benefit from this agenda, with a constituency-based bid in the pipeline for the Levelling Up Fund. I have already initially met with Sedgemoor and Mendip District Councils to discuss how we can utilise this fantastic opportunity for the towns and city across the patch.
We can now look forward as a country, but also as a county, and I am looking forward to seeing all these projects progress and really make a difference to this wonderful place.
