The Olympics began this week and have been such a joy for so many after a tumultuous 18 months and of course the year-long delay to the Games in Tokyo.
But it seems Team GB are not phased by such adversity and are having their best start to an Olympics – with 10 medals (at the time of writing, I am sure more have been added since).
There is also someone closer to home to keep an eye on with one of my constituents competing in the swimming and I am sure I speak for all of us when I say good luck to Brodie Williams from Street. He has already done brilliantly and has further events to come – including the 200metre backstroke.
I am so proud to have someone representing GB from this wonderful constituency and I hope the experience is all he hopes for.
It is clear the events are not the same without crowds due to the impact of Covid-19 on Japan, but once again it feels like the whole country is getting behind the athletes and their achievements seem even more remarkable without the physical support of their family, friends and spectators.
I am looking forward to the rest of the events and hope that once again it is a big sign that normality is returning in this country as we continue to come through this global pandemic.
