Over the past week, the Government has launched its Homes for Ukraine scheme for people in the UK to be able to offer their homes to host Ukrainian refugees.
The response has been incredible, with 90,000 people signing up on the first day, and more than 100,000 having now registered their interest – with the number rising every day. My inbox has shown me just how much people here in the Wells constituency – and across the country – are desperate to help all they can.
It must be said that this is a huge undertaking and a complex system to get right. The process will start tomorrow for those who personally know someone trying to flee Ukraine, whilst further process and checks will take place for those registering to be a host and who can do so for a minimum of six months.
There will be no cap on the number of Ukrainians who can come under the scheme as we look to support our friends through this awful time in their country. I have shared a number of resources on my Facebook page regarding signing up to sponsor a refugee, as well as places to donate to which will have the most impact on those who need it most. If you haven’t signed up yet, and you want to, log on to homesforukraine.campaign.gov.uk
It is a scary time, but it is heart-warming to see the support from the British people towards those who will need our support for years to come.
