As I write this, the doors have just been officially opened to Glastonbury Festival. The pandemic has meant this is the first festival in three years. It is great to have it back as not only is it a wonderful occasion, it contributes an enormous amount to the local economy. And whilst we’re always keen that the organisers work closely with the local authorities to minimise disruption for residents, it’s with great excitement that we welcome stars from around the world, and hundreds of thousands of music lovers, to our corner of Somerset this weekend.
I know Emily and Michael have worked extremely hard throughout the past few years to get this event back on and thriving, so I want to congratulate them on that. I also want to mention Commercial Director Robert Richards, who sadly died earlier this year. I worked with Robert on the Glastonbury Town Board, and he understood Somerset so well, and it was a privilege to hear him talk about Glastonbury and the wider area. I am sure there will be plenty of tributes to him over the coming days, and I know he would be immensely proud of the festival’s return for the first time since 2019.
