Today’s paper is published on the day that Parliament rises for the Christmas recess and thousands of children across Somerset will be breaking for their Christmas holiday. Many people will be finishing work for Christmas today, tomorrow or on Saturday and looking forward to a week or so of putting their feet up and enjoying time with friends and relatives.
However there will be some people in our community who will be working hard over the festive period to keep us safe, healthy and cared for. I spent a Christmas in Afghanistan during my time in the Army and I remember only too well how desperately I wanted to be at home celebrating with my family. I hope that as you tuck into your Christmas lunch, you’ll pause to think of those serving in our armed forces overseas, those working in our hospitals and health service, those on duty for the police, ambulance and fire service, and those at work as carers. They all have my deepest thanks and admiration.
Already this month, I’ve been fortunate to join many local community groups at their Christmas events as well as plenty of carol services too. We are fortunate to have such an amazing programme of events in our area and it all helps to make this time of year extra special. Thank you to everyone who has given their time to organise those events on top of their own preparations for Christmas.
And finally, may I take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry and restful Christmas.
