In what has been – and continues to be – an incredibly challenging time for this country, here in Somerset there is still a lot of work being undertaken in order to ensure we deliver our manifesto commitments, despite the challenges posed by Covid-19.
The Glastonbury Towns Fund is a perfect example of levelling up here in Somerset as we look to take advantage of up to £25million of Government cash. This ambitious sum can provide a huge asset to the community. The aim of the project is to provide employment opportunities and bring the community together and work is ongoing to make that a reality.
People are rightly concerned about the future with unemployment rising. But it is not all doom and gloom as Shepton Mallet this week received a boost. 500 jobs will be created as part of a major manufacturing contract awarded from HS2. Torr Works will play a massive part in the project and this will provide huge opportunities for those living in Shepton and the surrounding area.
It has also been announced that RUH Hospital in Bath will have a new cancer hospital built, while in Taunton Musgrove Hospital will be rebuilt. It goes without saying that facilities such as these have showcased their importance in recent months and to get the go-ahead for two excellent projects is pleasing as I know many of my constituents regularly use both hospitals.
I am continuing to work in Government to ensure Somerset gets the attention it deserves as we navigate life after the pandemic and continue to thrive afterwards – after all, there is no better place to live and work than this great county.
