Wells Constituency MP James Heappey visited the Royal Mail’s Delivery Office in Glastonbury to thank local postmen and women for all their hard work during Royal Mail’s busiest period of the year.
Mr Heappey visited the Delivery Office to see first-hand the operation of delivering Christmas post to addresses across Glastonbury, Street and the surrounding villages and to pass on season’s greetings to the busy staff. Mr Heappey was shown around by Delivery Office Manager, Matt Alford, and was introduced to the postmen and women, who are working flat out to sort and deliver mail over the Christmas period. This year Royal Mail has been celebrating its 500th anniversary, with this festive period marking half a millennium of delivering Christmas cards and parcels.
Mr Heappey said: “When you walk in to a sorting office at this time of year it is just the most staggering sight. Thousands of parcels, tens of thousands of letters and in the middle of it all; a small number of extraordinarily hardworking postmen and women ready to deliver our mail in all weathers. Some were even in shorts!”
“I’m hugely grateful to them for all the hard work they put in at this time of year.”
Matt Alford, Royal Mail Delivery Office Manager, said: “It was a pleasure to show James our Christmas operation and to hear his kind words of encouragement and support. We are extremely proud of our postmen and women for all their hard work during the Festive Season and for continuing our proud history of delivering Christmas mail.”
