Central Somerset MP James Heappey joined Glastonbury’s Mayor Jon Cousins and local small businesses in urging shoppers to support Small Business Saturday on 3rd December. The annual event supported by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, the Federation for Small Businesses and the Post Office is an opportunity for small businesses to promote what they do and win some of the pre-Christmas retail business.
Mr Heappey said: “So much of our Christmas shopping is now done online with big multinational companies so it’s easy to forget just how many different businesses there are on our high streets. Promoting Small Business Saturday to businesses in Glastonbury has been the most incredible experience. There are just so many different businesses all selling things that you’d struggle to find just about anywhere else. It is exactly what Small Business Saturday is all about – truly independent and small retailers offering thousands of perfect Christmas gifts. Do take this opportunity to support our high streets and our local small businesses.”
Mayor of Glastonbury, Jon Cousins, said: “Here in Glastonbury, we have a unique High Street with an unequalled blend of exceptional family-run businesses, successful independent traders, and flourishing local shops. Small business are part of our identity; they are an integral part of what makes us resilient as a community and unparalleled as a town. That’s why the Deputy Mayor and I are delighted to champion Small Business Saturday alongside our MP and Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce – to help highlight small business success and encourage consumers across the UK to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities.”
Paul Manning, Chairman of Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce, said: “With 98% of the shops in Glastonbury Town Centre being independent businesses, which must surely be one of the highest rates in the country, Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce are pleased to support Small Business Saturday. As Napoleon almost said, ‘Glastonbury is a town of shopkeepers.’”
