Pupils from Avalon School, in Street, have been working tirelessly to raise money for a hydrotherapy pool – and they are close to reaching their target.
The school caters for children with special educational needs and Street MP James Heappey paid a visit on Friday to find out about the project, and was treated to a presentation by the pupils.
The hydrotherapy pool will help pupils– and members of the local community – with their core physical well-being, as well as educational needs.
Mr Heappey said: “At the moment, the pupils that must have hydrotherapy are driven across to Bridgwater which can take up pretty much the whole school day, whilst other pupils who don’t necessarily have to have it but would benefit hugely from the experience nonetheless, miss out altogether.
“The pupils know how much they’d benefit but they also knew how essential it is for their friends.
“If you want to find out more about how you can donate to the cause, and about the students’ project, you can visit www.avalonschool.net/friends-of-avalon “
The pool will cost £1million and the school has already managed to secure around £800,000 of that.
The school’s headteacher, Alison Murkin, said: “We were delighted to welcome James to Avalon School last week. Pupils gave a presentation about our hydrotherapy pool fund raising campaign and quizzed him on his job as an MP.
“They were delighted with the keen interest he showed in the project and the questions he asked as well as his interesting and good humoured explanation of his role as an MP. The pupils said they would love him to visit again.”
