Earlier this week, the launch event for COP26 – which takes place in Glasgow later this year – showcased this Government’s commitment to tackling climate change.
Following experts’ advice, the Government has now committed to banning the sale of new petrol, diesel or hybrid cars by 2035, rather than 2040. This is in line with our target of getting to net zero by 2050.
I am so pleased to see we are following the science and making bold adjustments to our commitment as a Government – and a country – to address climate change. There is still a lot of debate about the net zero target, but I still firmly believe 2050 is an ambitious – but also realistic - target which will require immense commitment.
In Wells last week, I met with young activists to discuss this very plan and it was brilliant to see that generation so engaged. I was impressed with their knowledge and I am sure they will share their passion with friends and family in order to help make a real difference.
I am proud to be part of a Government which is putting environmental issues at the forefront of its plans and I was pleased to see the Prime Minister illustrate what a huge responsibility it is to protect our planet.
This is such an important issue both close to home here in the constituency and is a huge priority in Westminster.
I look forward to continuing to support the Government through this crucial time, as well as working with the community here in Somerset to make positive step forwards to tackle climate change.
