This week we passed a significant milestone with more than half of the UK population now having received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine. This is welcome progress towards meeting our target of offering all adults the vaccine by the end of July, which I know means a huge amount to local businesses in the lead up to busy summer season.
On Friday, I visited the team at West Mendip Hospital who have been so instrumental in the vaccination effort here in Somerset. I was delighted to hear that, at the time of my visit, over 61,000 people in the constituency have now received their coronavirus vaccine, and I am pleased to see uptake remains so high.
It’s clear from witnessing the collaborative effort of the County Council, PCNs, GP’s and vaccination volunteers why the vaccine rollout in our constituency continues to be so successful.
Both nationally and locally, with the announcement that people over the age of 42 can now come forward to get their vaccine, we remain on track to reach all adults by the end of July. The vaccine continues to be vital in our fight against Covid-19, and with each dose we are a step closer to reaching the next stage of the Prime Minister’s roadmap.
We still have a long way to go, but we can take this progress as a positive step forward with the vaccine playing an important role in keeping people safe as we return to normality.
