This week is National Volunteers’ Week and this past year has shown us more than ever that the community spirit is hugely important in times of struggle.
In my role in the Ministry of Defence, it was thought the Army were going to play a pivotal role in the delivery of food to the vulnerable in the lockdowns, as well as in the vaccine rollout. And while they have played their part – it became very clear, very quickly that communities at large wanted to help. The introduction of Coronavirus Networks and recruits to help GP surgeries deliver the vaccine have been crucial both during lockdown and when restrictions have been lifted.
I have spoken to so many volunteers in the Wells constituency over the past few months and not only have they felt valued by their fellow residents, but they have enjoyed the interactions with people and feeling like they are making a difference.
When visiting the various vaccine centres across the constituency, the sheer joy someone exudes after having their jab makes all volunteers feel a part of something special.
In the hardest 12 months of so many people’s lives, they have been crucial in keeping our great county going and we are indebted to them.
So, to all the volunteers across the Wells constituency, I just want to say thank you for all your hard work – this year would have been even tougher without you.
