The Department for Education has identified key areas across the country to be a dedicated Education Investment Area, with Somerset playing a leading role - something which has been warmly welcomed by Wells MP James Heappey.
The EIA’s will attract extra investment with retention payments for the best teachers as well as money and powers to ensure there are more excellent Multi Academy Trusts into the areas.
Mr Heappey said: “There are already some excellent MATs in the Wells constituency, and this will only enhance the fantastic work taking place in education across Somerset.
"Since I was elected back in 2015, I have worked hard to ensure the South West is not left behind in terms of all manner of things – but in particular - education. This is a great opportunity for us in Somerset to ensure we get the very best support from Government and for education to prosper in this part of the world. I look forward to working with schools closely and seeing this Levelling Up plan in action. “
There will also be £550 million boost to expand the popular Skills Bootcamps across the country and children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), their families and caregivers will be better supported with respite care and internship opportunities.
Councils will be funded £30 million for the next three years to set up more than 10,000 additional respite placements.
