It is only right that I write this column about the situation in Ukraine – something I hoped I wouldn’t have to do.
The sanctions from the British Government – and governments around the world – have shown Russia that we are united with Ukraine who are fighting unbelievably admirably.
It was crucial the decision was made to remove Russia from the international SWIFT financial servers – and I am pleased the UK led the way on that decision.
We have all been inspired by the bravery and leadership of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the heroism we are seeing from the citizens and Armed Forces in Ukraine in what is an extremely perilous situation.
The UK will continue to support them in every way we reasonably can, but we must be very clear-eyed about the size of the Russian force Putin has amassed against them.
The MOD is working day and night to ensure the Ukrainians get everything they can from us, as are Ukraine’s fellow allies in the West. It is a dark time in history, and we must continue doing our best to fight for what is right for innocent civilians and to defend freedom and democracy.
